How to Contour Your Neck

Neck Contouring Is the Latest Trend — And We're Not Mad About It

In case you haven't noticed, contouring isn't just for the face anymore. If you have a body part, there's a way to sculpt it with makeup — clavicle, cleavage, abs — the list goes on. Writers at Lipstick.com pointed out a new technique that has makeup fiends buzzing: neck contouring.

Instagram user mwhairstyles demonstrated a quick tutorial on how to accent an elegant updo by shadowing and highlighting the nape of your neck. Many people might look at this video and roll their eyes (and I don't blame them!), but some are saying that it will cause insecurities. That seems a little silly. I'm not internalizing that the DIY exists because the back of my neck is too fat. I don't believe the majority of viewers would, either. Sure, the obsession with contouring may have gone too far (clown contouring, anyone?), but I think that comes from being mesmerized by the transformative power of makeup.

Above all, beauty is an art, and art doesn't have to be serious — it should be fun. Would techniques like henna contouring exist if there wasn't a playful side to cosmetics? I think not. While this new DIY isn't a necessary one to master, there's no harm in its existence. If a woman wants to make her neck look more swanlike while sporting a ballerina bun, so be it. To tell her that she's ridiculous for doing so is nothing more than makeup shaming, and that's far more uncool than contouring could ever be.
