Ocean's 8 Delves Into Rihanna's "Authentically Bajan" Side
Ocean's 8 finally hits theaters June 21 with Rihanna adding another acting credit to her resume as she joins Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter in the line-up of leading ladies.
The movie sees Bullock as Debbie Ocean, a woman fresh from five years in prison who has devised a plan to steal the Toussaint, Cartier's one-of-a-kind diamond necklace, valued at a whopping $150 million. With famous faces, including James Corden (as John Frazier, an insurance investigator) in the flick, Rihanna is in pretty good company. But it seems like her character will stand-out on the big screen.
Described as "one of the best hackers on the east coast" she plays Nine Ball, a dreadlocked computer whiz helping crack The Met Gala's ultra-sophisticated security system to execute Ocean's plan. And it's in this role we're really reminded of Rihanna's Caribbean roots.
"I met Rihanna after a concert one night in Sweden and we began talking about the potential for this character — to lean into where she came from and make her authentically Bajan. We both got excited by that," Director Gary Ross says. "I loved every minute with her on set. She is such an incredibly kind, lovely, enthusiastic, person and wonderful in the movie; she lights up the world around her. We just had a blast."
