With Summer well and truly upon us and with public beaches in Dubai now reopen, it's time to unpack our hats, sunscreen, and protective sun gear. Not only that, now is also time to up our skincare regime up a notch, to ensure that it's protected from sun-related damage and issues, such as sunburn and the increase in the rate of oily and dry skin.

To better understand how to protect our skin during Summer, as well as how the sun can damage it, we speak to Dr. Eman Kotb, the specialist dermatologist at Medcare Medical Centre – Sharjah.

"The increase in temperatures during the hot Summer months, combined with humidity and heat – increases the activity of the sebaceous glands, which is responsible for worsening the appearance of oily and dry skin. While sunlight has many benefits, especially when it comes to skin, too much of it can cause skin damage, photoaging, hyperpigmentation, and sun allergies. It could cause your DNA to mutate at a cellular level, causing skin cancer," explains Dr. Kotb.
