Mandy Moore's Trainer Tells Us About the Workouts That Shaped Her Lean Body

Mandy Moore won over the hearts of pretty much everyone in the hit show This Is Us. Even though the season finale on March 13 left us in tears, we can still take joy in the fact that Mandy is still giving us all the fitness and wellness inspiration we could ever want. We spoke to her trainer, founder of Rise Nation Jason Walsh, who has a long list of strong women in Hollywood he's worked with — Jessica Biel, Alison Brie, Brie Larson, and Emma Stone. He gave us the inside scoop on how Mandy keeps that lean, gorgeous physique.

"She's so dedicated," Jason told POPSUGAR. "I'll see her sometimes four or five days a week. Sometimes when she's really busy and has a hectic schedule it'll only be three times a week." She makes the long drive out to his West Hollywood fitness studio without complaint, and she almost always trains in the morning. "She's a morning person," he said.

When we asked Jason what her favorite strength-training moves are, he joked, "I don't know she's ever voiced her favorite exercises." But he shared that Mandy did initially come in with some lower-back pain, so he created a functional program for her that would "help to start eliminating some of those issues."

"We do a lot of hip extensions or hip thrusts — getting the hips working, getting the glutes functioning, which helps stabilize the hips," Jason explained. They also do "back extensions and banded hip extensions." Jason says this kind of posterior work is essential for most people, because he finds that the emphasis is usually disproportionately placed on the anterior, or the front side of the body.

"A lot of that has to do with what you see in the mirror," he explained. "You kind of forget about the backside." Additionally, Jason and Mandy do "a lot of lateral movements with the bands — band walks and things like that."

As for pull-ups, they work on their own modified versions. "Mandy's a taller girl, so she's got longer limbs," Jason said. "Sometimes pull-ups are going to be a lot harder for people with different 'levers,' as we call them." He adjusts a pair of rings so that she can hold onto them with her feet still on the ground in front of her. "So they're kind of like assisted pull-ups, and they're great because they help with strengthening of the lats and arms," he said.

Finally, we had to ask Jason whether Mandy does a lot of core work, because you can't deny the fact that she's got flat abs. "People would be lying if they say they don't do direct ab work," he shared. "There's nothing wrong with doing direct work on certain muscle groups if they're lacking. I just do them at the very end, kind of as a secondary exercise."

Jason has Mandy doing crunches and planks on a Pilates ball, but he added, "We do most of the core strengthening by doing a lit of the heavier lifting or functional movements that we do." So her flat midsection wasn't sculpted entirely from the crunches and planks.
