We all know that recycling aluminum, plastics, and papers is good for the environment, but this Ramadan season, this earth-friendly practice may benefit your wallet, too.
A new initiative launched by Dubai Municipality seeks to raise awareness about recycling and waste reduction, and is rewarding people who participate. Called 'Recover the value of your waste,' the program will reward anyone who hands in their recyclable material with coupons that can be traded in for food.
According to Gulf News, "Talib Julfar, Assistant Director-General at the municipality's Environment and Public Health Services Sector launched the initiative at the Emirates Cooperative Society premises in the presence of Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, Director of the Waste Management Department."
Dubai residents can head to the Emirates Cooperative Society in Al Twar 3 to hand in plastic bottles and aluminum cans in exchange for coupons that can be traded in for bags filled with packaged food and bottles of juice.
"The aim of this initiative is to establish a culture of sorting the waste from its source and classifying it as per its value and enhancing the level of environmental awareness among the public, especially the visitors to the shopping malls and markets," said Saifaie, speaking to Gulf News.
"In addition to that, this culture carries a unique meaning that helps personality development, which enhances social responsibility and thus achieving sustainable development," he continued.
The new initiative is a great way to help reduce pollution and conserve resources-- let's hope they'll make this a year-round thing!
